Unikino GEGENLICHT
Cinema is the cultural interpretation of the world through film.
And that is precisely what we are committed to. We show everything from current releases to classics, fantasy to documentaries. Films that have moved us and that we now want to share with you. We prefer to show our films in their original language with German subtitles (OmU). Special highlights include our many special programs and seasonal specials.
We pay special attention to the short film genre: at the beginning of each event, a short film related to the main film is shown. In 2001, this gave rise to the Oldenburg Short Film Festival zwergWERK. In 2018, we launched LICHTAUS, our legendary special format for trash films, followed in 2020 by the explosive POPCORNKINO. Since 2023, music has been playing at MUSICAL MOVIE MITTWOCH, and since 2024, the nights at ANIME NIGHTS have been simply fantastic!
We have been at Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg for a long time. The first cinema initiative was launched in 1974/75, and after a short break, it continued in 1993 under the name GEGENLICHT. In 2015, we took the leap from analog to digital, and in the winter semester of 2015/16, we found a new home at the Unikum cultural center. This is another reason why we value cooperation with other student projects or Oldenburg groups outside the campus.
However, the whole thing depends on a variety of support. We are a group of students who run the cinema in our spare time. We are supported by the AStA, which enables us to finance our program and keep admission prices low. But support also means openness.
